woooot for 24 hour days! I actually have absolutely no recollection when I slept last :D. Well thats alright, many xmas things to do still and not nearly enough time to do them all. Also started some paintings, trying to get back into the swing of real media painting. Its been forever since I actually painted, and longer since I painted on illustration board. I completely forgot how paint acts on the boards x.x so it's taking some time getting reaquainted and trying to refresh my memory on techniques.

I do have a question and perhaps someone has an amiable answer. I am having trouble scanning larger pieces into my computer. They turn out blurry and distorted unless the picture sits flush with the glass of the scanner (and since most of my real media stuff outside sketches is bigger than an 8.5x11" sheet of paper) that is kinda tricky. I have also tried taking photos with my digital camera ut the lighting is poor in this house and outside is out since its raining. So the colors are coming out all wrong. BUT I need to have good scans of real media pieces so I can perhaps offer prints of them in the future, especially when I sell the original at a con or what have you. Is there a place I can go to get scans of my work or perhaps a good scanner someone can recommend? other ideas??!! Thanks in advance folks :).

WIP tiger. acrylic on illustration board. Both of these don't do the piece justice, both the scanner and camera munched the pic

What do you use to take the pic with the camera? Do you put the flash on? Do you have a red-eye reduction flash? It flashes at a different speed before the shutter captures the photo. I always find if I need a flash, this one makes the colors look much better.

flash always seems to leave a huge glare on the picture x.x..I have incandescent lightbulbs in the room and they always bathe everything in a yellowish light. I need to play more with the settings on the camera, but even so the resolution just isn't to my liking with a camera.

It's best to work under white light. In your studio are you useing white lights?

(The painting looks great so far, btw!)

I don't have a studio :(..I work at home in a small bedroom. But hey you do what ya gotta do. I would love to get better lighting in here as these bulbs just give such dingy light it really messes with my eyes and especially when it comes to mixing colors.

Wow, I bet. God bless ya!

Usually at art stores you can buy spectrum lights... or the Reveal (I think that's what they're called) lights from Wal-Mart work just the same!

That's why I'd try the red eye light if you have it. The flash isn't as extreme and it'll take out that yellow tint.

Adorable! From the looks of it, you haven't lost any skills when it comes to painting. The scenery is especially well-done. The tiger is very well-done as well, and even though this is a media that we don't see from you often, you can still tell that it's a Balaa piece. I think it's amazing how well you are able to transfer your style from one medium and method to another. That's REAL talent. My own criticism on the piece would be that the snowflakes kinda look like they are all in one plane rather than falling farther away in the distance. But that's just a little thing. The painting is incredible and I hope we can see more of that type of artwork from you!!

the actual piece has more of a depth appearance to the snowflakes but thats something else I wanna work on..thank ya for the advice :).

Mmm...I know for one that certain professional artists that really want to make some money/a living off their art through prints and such...they usually get professional photographers to photograph their paintings. These usually come out really high quality and are very good for prints, from what I've seen. However, I'm not sure how much it'd cost. I guess, it depends on the photographer and the level of their skills...
Sorry, I can't provide much else in forms of suggestions. Good luck, though.

The painting looks lovely! I really like the way you did the background and fur. =) I can't wait to see it completed!

Well, in order to get really good detail from my digital camera, I take a picture on "Macro" mode. It tends to work really well for me on taking close-up pictures. I don't know how it would work for something as flat as a canvas...but you never know. :)

Its amazing what a different the lighting can make on colors :/ Photographing art is hard. Even monitors vary in color. It is hard to represent a piece if you aren't seeing it in person. It looks good though.
