K so I may be taking this xena thing too far XD..do I care? course not.

I got bored...very bored..so pulled up a ton of xena pics and doodled this idly.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

ideas on bg, compositon, mood, colors...how to improve it are welcome. The idea I have is, should it be painted, the horse and foreground warriors will be kinda blurred and same with the bg, so the focus would be on Balaa. Also the armour will be refined..I wanna go with something between xena and the armour seen in lotr(especially the elven armour). OH and I shortened Balaa's muzzle...seemed to give her a more feminine look.

Thats all for now, thanks for looking and commenting folks, I am always welcome to ideas :).

wow balaa! this is soo amazing! i love how this picture kinda have the 'lord of the rings' feel to it. the armor should definitely look like an elvish armor, maybe have a crest(or an animal symbol) on the chest area? well i'm not really 100% sure on armors, but I'm pretty sure you will draw it better! i can't wait to see the final product!

Yayk! There is really battle mood coming up ;) Bg and Balaa herself look really interesting/awesome, its a bit a pity that the head of her horsie is cut off, not sure how much more work it would be to show the whole head there, but you could also give the horse a nice helmet then, like they head in LOTR.

*wavezzz* Greetings!

OOOH so yummy! I didnt notice your comment until now, Im too slow for my own good! Yes I needa pop in my lotr dvd's and get some screencaps of horsies. I loved all the armour in those movies..made me drool with envy that I could be there to help design and make it all XD.

Wow, your sketches look _so_ awesome every time :) I'd like to see if you can really finish that one, it looks so complex that I don't think I could ever pull off that sort of thing. But your every work looks great, so I guess this'd look wonderful finished as well :)

I like especially the horses, and the armour-thing. Armours are hard to draw, I'd love to see you drawing that :) Maybe the horse head could be completely visible instead of being cut in half? I dunno, I like to see horse drawings, horses are very pretty animals.

Yes I think you mjay be right. I started it cut off at that angle with the idea that I wanted the steed's eye to stand out and have an almost shocking look but I kinda like the idea of the whole horse being there so I can play with armour more. I think this is a piece I definetly want to see evolve and grow. Thank you for your suggestion, well taken :).

Very pretty! I think the Xena/LotR look really works for her. XD Love the horses too. Lovely work!

*stares at it for a while* I think I'd go with a 'dusty at sunset' feel. Like the bloody sun is illuminating the party on the move. Thick reds and muddy oranges and yellows with a strong light from the left and a hazy film obscuring the characters in the background so that only XenaBalaa (and the horse) and perhaps the lion are the only sharp, detailed chars, and the rest downgrade in focus to a dirty silhouette in the BG. But if that were the case, I'd consider a different color for the horse.

But that's what I gots in my head :3 I think it's got marvelous potential, and however you decide to tackle it, it'll come out smashingly.

lol! What an awesome picture! XD I never really invisioned Balaa as a "warrior" before...but she seems perfect for the role in this picture. :) I also liked the fact that you didn't just leave her all alone and added lots of other lion-like characters too.

I think a black steed would like nice. Or, maybe one of those grey ones with a spotted coat....hmm. Oops! Excuse my rambling, my cold medication is just kicking in! Fweeeee!! *bounds away*

rambling, my dear...is welcome...and even..encouraged in my journal ;). I always love to hear what ideas people get when they see such rough sketch because it does leave room for the imagination to wander and frankly many of the ideas people give me I absolutely love! I was atually thinking a grey horsie XD...because the more I thought of it, though OH how I love black horsies, it might be too much concentration of dark colors on the right side of the piece which will throw off the balance of the composition.

Ok now..Balaa warrior princess commandeth you to get better. She will bout the cold germs with big sharp pointy things O_O and her chakram.

Palomino or dun/buckskin would be awesome too. C: (and I do think you should complete the head. It might be sorta distracting cut in half, plus I love teh horsiness)

I'd think golds and some goldish-greens would be awesome colors for this, and an orangey sunset sky. And your famous backlighgting. C:

And a bit of nitpicking. the armour lines on her chest don't curve exactly the way they would I don't think. o_O maybe just make them curve up a bit towards her sides. :) Though you probably would have refined that anyway in the finished product. C: And the front of the horses neck . . . the line should be pulled more to the right, because his neck looks a bit thin as of now. If that makes any sense at all. o_O;;

I love how you don't sketch freakishlyuberclean like absolutely everyone else. Now I don't feel alone. XD

This is gonna be so awesome. :D Can't wait to see.

HAHA! yes the armour needs..umm a lot of work. Im thinking of extending the paldrons a little bit and humm..well have to figure out some suitable and non boring designs. But yeah that bugs me lots..along with well most of the horse in general. Geebus I need practice with equines...I drool everytime I see the horses drawn in the concept art for lotr...can't help but envy the skill and precision some of those artists had in their depictions. As for lighting..yesss you pinned it exactly..something heavily moody..just a THICK atmosphere, very heavy and saturated in light and shadow. nummyyy.

And...I used to want to present cleanish sketches..because I see a lot of others do that..well thats not the way I sketch..I sketch insanely fast and scribbly...so why not show my unpolished side??? after all scribblies show more personality and maybe more into the methods of drawing.

exactly. XD I love seeing other peoples rough sketches, it's always interesting to see the construction and whatnot. C: 'tis helpful, even.
